Sometimes, one of the best things for a young player is to step into a different environment, different position, different level of competition or different group of teammates.

That’s why DME Academy, Sarasota supports guest play. Here is our full policy.

But we also believe there is a right way to do it.

Why We Support Guest Play

Guest playing can provide experiences that a player’s normal team schedule simply can’t always offer.

It can mean more meaningful minutes for a player who needs game experience. It can challenge a player by putting them in an unfamiliar position or role. It can expose them to different coaches, teammates and styles of play.

It can also take players outside their normal geography and comfort zone, allowing them to experience different tournaments, opponents and levels of competition.

Those experiences matter.

Young players need opportunities to solve new problems. They need to learn how to walk into an unfamiliar environment, communicate with new teammates and compete without everything around them being comfortable.

For the right player at the right time, guest play can be an excellent developmental tool.

More Isn’t Always Better

There is another side of guest playing that youth soccer has to take seriously.

Our players are playing a lot of soccer.

Club training, league games, tournaments, school soccer, additional training, guest play and other opportunities can quickly accumulate.

Another tournament might provide four additional games — but those games also represent additional physical and mental load.

Overplaying can lead to fatigue. Repetitive physical stress without sufficient recovery can contribute to overuse concerns. And sometimes another weekend of games simply isn’t what a player’s development needs most.

There are times when the better developmental decision is training, technical work, strength and conditioning or recovery rather than another four games.

That’s why our philosophy is simple: Guest play should add to development, not compete with it.

DME Comes First

For DME players, commitments to their DME Academy Sarasota team and, when applicable, their DME school program remain the priority.

That doesn’t mean players can’t pursue outside opportunities.

Quite the opposite.

We want our players to experience the game, challenge themselves and take advantage of opportunities that can help them grow.

We simply want those opportunities coordinated so coaches can consider the player’s existing schedule, workload and individual development plan before adding more soccer.

Our Guest Play Process

We’ve intentionally kept the process simple.

1. Player/Parent → Coach

Start by discussing the opportunity with your DME coach. Tell them where you’re considering playing, the dates, number of games and level of competition.

2. Coach → Director

The coach communicates the opportunity with the appropriate DME Director.

3. DME → Plan

We look at the bigger picture: the player’s DME schedule, recent and upcoming workload, potential developmental value, physical demands and existing commitments.

4. Go Play.

When the opportunity makes sense, we’ll help put the plan in motion.

The objective isn’t to create barriers. It’s to make better decisions for players.

Development Is Bigger Than One Team

We want DME players who are confident enough to walk into new environments and compete.

Go play with older players.

Experience a different position.

Compete against a different level.

Travel somewhere you’ve never played.

Learn from another coach.

Meet different teammates.

Get meaningful minutes.

Those experiences can make players better — and they can make them appreciate and understand the game differently.

But development also means learning when to recover.

The goal isn’t to accumulate the largest possible number of games. The goal is to accumulate the right experiences.

Families interested in guest playing with DME can provide the player’s age group, position and event of interest, and we’ll connect them with the appropriate coach.
