DME Conquers Rome: A Journey of Soccer, Culture, and Passion

April 20, 2025

In an unforgettable week of soccer, culture, and camaraderie, DME Academy made its mark on the international stage again, this time during their trip to Italy for the prestigious Rome Surf Cup. Traveling with four teams—the 2012 Girls, 2008 Girls, 2010 Boys, and 2008 Boys—DME proudly represented American soccer, delivering standout performances and showcasing the Academy’s signature determination, motivation, and excellence.

A Championship Run: 2012 Girls Crowned Champions

Among the standout stories of the tournament was the exceptional run of the 2012 Girls, who played two years up and still emerged champions of the Rome Surf Cup. Facing powerhouse professional clubs like Lazio and Roma CF in group play, the girls showed incredible maturity and poise, culminating in a dramatic semifinal victory over top pro club AS Roma. The girls won this game 4-2 on aggregate (PKS) and advanced to the finals. In the final, DME faced off against Romulea, where the girls sealed the deal with a confident 2-0 victory, lifting the trophy and earning the admiration of family, fans and organizers alike.

2008 Boys & 2010 Boys: Runner-Up Finishes with Heart

The 2008 Boys and 2010 Boys teams both fought their way to the finals matching up against top-tier Italian opposition including Romulea, Dabliu EUR, and Athletic Soccer Academy. The 2008 Boys showcased tactical discipline and technical excellence but ultimately fell 2-0 in the final match playing a man down against a strong and direct team in Romulea. Similarly, the 2010 Boys battled bravely, reaching the final where they faced a tough rematch against Romulea, falling just short in a narrow 2-1 defeat. Despite the outcomes, both teams played with tremendous spirit and left everything on the field and the club could not be more proud of their showing.

2008 Girls: Growth Through Challenge

The 2008 Girls had one of the most demanding schedules, going up against the likes of Roma, Lazio, and Roma CF (twice). Scoring in each game, the team showed progress and resilience, learning firsthand the style, speed, and strategy of elite Italian youth soccer. While results didn’t go their way, the girls embraced the experience, grew as players, and supported one another with heart and determination throughout the trip. There is learning to come from victories and defeat.

Beyond the Pitch: A Cultural and Sporting Experience

The week in Rome wasn’t just about soccer—it was a full immersion into Italian life. Players and their families explored iconic landmarks including the Vatican, soaking in centuries of art, history, and tradition. They also enjoyed unforgettable live soccer experiences, attending a Lazio Europa League quarterfinal match and a Serie A fixture featuring AS Roma, giving young athletes an up-close look at professional football at its highest level.

Adapting & Overcoming

Competing internationally presented its share of challenges—from adapting to different rules and officiating styles to managing injuries and the emotional swings of high-stakes competition. But through it all, DME athletes demonstrated resilience, adaptability, and an unshakable team spirit. Their performances were a testament to the academy’s training philosophy and the values they bring to every match.

More than just a tournament, the trip to Rome was a statement: DME is here to compete and we will continue to push the envelope. Whether lifting trophies or gaining valuable international experience, all four teams represented the Academy with toughness, and the distinct American flare that caught the attention—and hearts—of tournament staff, local fans, and opposing teams alike.

We are DME. And we’re just getting started.
